The
stupa that was built was a stupa called a Tashi Gomang stupa.
This type of stupa follows certain guidelines that indicate
its intention and relevance. The stupa contains relics from
Tilopa, Marpa, Milarepa, Rechungpa, the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa,
Longchenpa, Lodro Thaye, Dilgo Khyentse, Tulku Urgyen, and
Trungpa Rinpoche. It also contains wood from the Bodhi tree,
the four elements, stones from the eight pilgrimage sites
in India, 100,000 tsa tsas, and many medicinal herbs. Thrangu
Rinpoche was very close to the 16th Karmapa and spent 20 years
of his life (along with Khenpo Karthar) teaching at Rumtek,
India the seat of the Karmapa. When asked why he had built
Vajra Vidya in Sarnath, India Thrangu Rinpoche said that the
16th Gyalwa Karmapa had wanted to build a monastery close
to the Deer Park where the Buddha first taught. In order to
fulfill his teacher's wish Thrangu Rinpoche has built an Institute
that is a reflection of his great devotion to his teacher
the 16th Karmapa and a key element in maintaining the unbroken
lineage of the Kagyus.
