TRAVEL TO NEPAL
UPDATE - NOVEMBER 2011

It is not unsafe to be in Nepal. Many foreigners come here as tourists and many live here.

There is not a war with the Maoists as they have joined the government. There is some civil unrest here and there, especially in the Terai region in the south. It seems that the only difficulty for foreigners is the frequent transportation strikes. However these strikes are sporadic. This year there has been very few strikes.

I have lived here many years and do not feel unsafe. Many tourists are coming to Nepal in nearly all seasons. Many people are going trekking in the mountains and traveling all over Nepal. Lumbini, Birthplace of the Buddha is attracting many pilgrims and tourists. 2012 is Visit Lumbini Year. There’s many foreign Buddhists living and studying in Boudhanath, the main Buddhist area of the Great Stupa and over 60 monasteries. We hear of very few difficulties. As it is a poor country, sometimes people are robbed but that can happen in any country. One just needs to be careful.
